What’s New Archives

2004.02.25: This site is currently in a “live” redesign process. You can view progress reports on this Whatever page: Site Redesign....

2003.09.19: I’ve add two new desktops and updated some others in my Desktops page. Enjoy.

2003.08.09: If things start to look funky around here, it’s because I’m making some changes to the underlying code. If something does look funky, and if you are courteous and kind, please let me know what’s funky (screenshots help) at: somebody (at) joek.com.

2003.04.19: I’m switching the default color style over to “Easter” for this weekend.

2003.02.17: This site is in need of a redesign. Unfortunately, with classes, it will be a slow process.

2002.12.20: I’ve just added two “promotions” to the top of every page. Please check them out, and help them out.

2002.12.11: I’m switching the default color style over to “Christmas” for the rest of the month.

2002.12.04: It’s Christmas time, and you know what that means... time for a Christmas color style. Enjoy.

2002.11.23: I’ve added five new jokes to this site. The first of the new ones, Hu’s on First, I first saw at Kottke.org. But then I found it on many other sites, so I figured that I would share the humor as well.

2002.11.14: It’s here. I completed a Thanksgiving color style for this site. The background graphic is only 1024 by 786 pixels (and highly compressed), but who uses a browser any larger than that?

2002.10.26: Better late than never... just in time for Halloween, I’ve got a new color style called just that: “Halloween”. Hope you enjoy.

2002.09.16: It has been a while since I’ve made any substantial updates, but I just looked in my referrer logs, and found two new links: SODA v2.1 :: Students of Design Association (with site customization options) and Sophia's Personnel (a Japanese personal site).

2002.06.13: In whatever: 2002.06.13, the dream I had the other night, about survival, luck, and the lottery. Also, I’ve added some more color styles to the change section. The colors in them are based on the W3C’s Core Styles.

2002.06.06: Two new links: Internet Anagram Server and Bad Astronomy. Check ’em out.

2002.05.28: I’ve been away from my Web site for too long. I’m going to try to change that. A new entry in whatever: 2002.05.28. Three new jokes. And a new section for short, daily blurbs of thought: blah.

2002.03.29: Another new addition to the color styles: Black/Minimal, a negative-image version of White/Minimal.

2002.03.27: As part of the previous day’s revisions to this site, I’ve finally cleaned up the “Monochromes” color styles (as I was never truly happy with all of the color variations). Try them out, and let me know if they’re any better.

2002.03.25: Added a new color style for the approaching holiday: Easter. You might also notice that some aspects of this site have changed (notably the change page and the footer at the bottom of all pages). These visible changes are just a part of the major overhaul I’ve been working on over the past few weeks. I have now converted this site to XHTML 1.0. Why would I do this and what does this mean? For me it’s nothing more than the ongoing attempt to further my skills, and where better to do this than with my own site. But my site is a large one filled with content (over 100 pages of jokes, 98 poems, 101 whatever entries, etc), and as such, I may have missed a few things in converting and uploading my site. So, if you do happen to notice any problems (or just have any comments), please feel free to e-mail me at joek@joek.com.

2002.03.07: Happy Birthday Judy!

2002.03.01: A “thank you” to Jim Stalder for finding a typo in the portfolio section.

2002.02.26: I’ve changed the default color and font style of this site to “White/Minimal” and “Verdana Titles, Georgia Text”. Let’s see if this looks nicer for when people first visit this site.

2002.02.15: A quick rant in whatever: 2002.02.15. If you don’t want to read it, then just don’t search my site for “input query”.

2002.02.14: Happy Valentine’s Day. For today, I've switched the color style of this site to “Valentine’s”. Don’t worry, the color style you’ve selected will be restored by tomorrow. Enjoy.

2002.02.05: Two quick links in whatever: 2002.02.05.

2002.02.01: For February, I’ve created a new color style: Valentine’s.

2002.01.31: Added three new links today.

2002.01.29: Dropped the design for Netscape 4. Ever since I switched to a CSS-only layout, I’ve maintained (through a SSI browser detection) the previous table-based layout for Netscape 4 users. Well, that’s gone on long enough. Netscape 4 had its time, and now it’s time is over. There are now plenty of better browsers than Netscape 4 (even though I still use Netscape 4 for e-mail). And even if you still want to stick with Netscape 4, my site’s content is still accessible, even if it’s not pretty.

2002.01.28: In whatever: 2002.01.28, a rant about the Dr. Dolittle 2 DVD.

2002.01.23: Added another color style based on kottke.org. Also, we got a new car!

2002.01.20: Joe & Judy’s 1st Wedding Anniversary.

2002.01.17: In today’s whatever: 2002.01.17, three sites worth commenting on.

2002.01.16: What’s one of the greatest things that can happen to a site like mine? Getting mentioned at Zeldman. Party. Party. Party.

2002.01.15: Added a new link (Fonthead Design), and four more color styles based on A List Apart, Fathom5, Metafilter, and Zeldman.com (with thanks to their respective designers).

2002.01.14: In whatever: 2002.01.14, more childish fun.

2002.01.09: In whatever: 2002.01.09, I got an e-mail that has a very good idea for dealing with—or at least getting revenge against—junk mail.

2002.01.08: Added twenty more jokes (from the e-mail archives) to the jokes section.

2002.01.07: After a long absence, updates are coming back. New entry: whatever: 2002.01.07. New designs and more font options at: change. Removed some broken links from: links.

2001.12.09: This site is now five years old.

2001.12.05: I’m in the process of transfering this domain to another hosting service. But in the meantime, Judy received a joke in her e-mail that was so funny, I had to post it: Little Johnny’s Story.

2001.11.19: Modified the navigation menu to place items into groups.

2001.10.08: I’ve created a portfolio section to show off work I did while at my previous Web production jobs, as well as work I’m doing now.

2001.09.28: I’ve been working (from home), and I haven’t given myself much time to update this site. But I have created a new color style for this site. It’s called “Stars & Stripes” and yes, it’s patriotic. It’s something I’ve been meaning to create for the past couple of weeks, but now I got around to it. I hope you enjoy.

2001.09.11: Terrorists Attacks In U.S.
Commercial airliners crash into World Trade Center Towers.
This is unbelievable. This is not just an American tragedy... but it is a global tragedy that terrorist acts can lead to such massive destruction and unfathomable loss of life. I cannot understand the people that would do such a thing, nor why they would want to. Our sympathies to everyone involved.

2001.08.09: Something new in whatever: 2001.08.09.

2001.08.07: Reviewed American Pie 2 in whatever: 2001.08.07.

2001.07.31: Updated the “royal” color style to include a background graphic, added two new links, and made another whatever entry.

2001.07.30: Reviewed Jurassic Park III in whatever: 2001.07.30.

2001.07.18: Another day, another 28 color styles, plus four different layouts for this site! Enjoy. I have also finally reviewed Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within in whatever: 2001.07.18

2001.07.17: Another day, another two color styles.

2001.07.16: Well the testing of the new design is going good, and now I’ve been able to add color and font styles to this new design. Also, a “thank you” to Ernestine Hinz for finding two typos on this site. If you find any, please be kind and let me know.

2001.07.14: Testing out new design layout built with Cascading Style Sheets rather than tables. Visit A List Apart or The Web Standards Project to find out more about why I did this. I still have to create different and better color schemes for this new design layout. I also don’t have a wide array of browsers and platforms to test this new layout in, so if you notice anything really bad, please e-mail me.

2001.07.08: Reviewed Cats & Dogs in whatever: 2001.07.08.

2001.06.28: Added another desktop to my Desktops page: Sunflower, created for, and inspired by Judy.

2001.06.26: Added a new link to the links page: SiteCritique. I just found this site today, but I already consider it a great site to get your site reviewed and to review other people’s sites. I also removed the Frequently asked questions from the site navigation. I hadn’t been updated in over a year and didn’t seem too popular. I replaced it with a link to Change site design.

2001.06.21: Added two new links to the links page, and added an update to my contition at whatever: 2001.06.21.

2001.06.19: Added some more jokes I got via e-mails.

2001.06.17: Reviewed Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in whatever: 2001.06.17.

2001.06.16: Improved the navigation of whatever. Now you can browse through the entries by either date or subject.

2001.06.12: Links are good. They link to me, and I link to them.

2001.06.10: Added four new jokes sent to me by co-workers and one of Judy’s friends. I’ve grouped them into the categories, as well as a new category for new jokes. I’ll post more from e-mails when I get time.

2001.06.03: Not much new happening. See whatever: 2001.06.03. Also added two new links to the links page.

2001.05.21: The votes on the search design are in. My site now has a search. Party on.

2001.05.17: Thanks to Atomz (preferred search of Kottke), I’ve added a search function to this site. Yeah! However, I still haven’t decided where on my pages to place the search form. Here’s where you come in. I have two ideas of where to put the search, Search Demo 1 and Search Demo 2. E-mail me and let me know which one you like. On Monday I’ll tally the votes and decide.

2001.05.06: Wrote a review of The Mummy Returns in whatever: 2001.05.06.

2001.04.24: Finally added a new poem to the poetry section. A Valentine’s Poem, written for Judy for Valentine’s Day.

2001.04.11: I’ve returned, put only partially. It’s all explained in whatever: 2001.04.11.

2001.01.20: Joe Kaczmarek and Judy Siu Manchoy marry at 4:30p.m. at the Mai-Kai.

2001.01.04: Broke the list of jokes in the jokes section into categories.

2001.01.02: Converted “Quote of the Moment” (below) from a JavaScript random generator to a cgi script random generator. I found the cgi script random text generator at Matt’s Script Archive.

2000.12.22: Added a new joke How To Plan A Wedding to the jokes section. (Thanks: Denis Voitenko.)

2000.12.16: Added two new links to the links page.

2000.12.14: Redesigned this site. Once again I’ve changed this site’s design. But this time it is even more for the better. Not only is this new design more accessible (like I intended the last design to be with four different levels of accessibility), but it is also easier for me to manage and update. It also now includes a feature to make it more user customizable. You can now choose how the site will look (colors, fonts, even some graphics) using a set of pre-defined styles. Try this by going to “Change site design” below.
